Full disclosure: this was my first time making popcorn on the stove.

Full disclosure part II: It was awesome.

White Chocolate Popcorn with Matcha

My family has never been much of the popcorn type- not even at movies. I think I remember once or twice doing sleepovers with friends in high school and buying the microwavable popcorn because it seemed like the right thing to do, but beyond that, it’s never quite tickled my fancy.

Maybe it’s because I’m more of a sweets (read: chocolate) kind of gal.

I remember once when I was little though, someone gave my parents a gift of colored popcorn in a glass jar for Christmas. It sat sadly in our pantry for years until one day my dad- whom, in my entire existence, I have never seen cook a single thing- decided to try and cook it. Let’s just say the event ended with fire alarms going off. the smell of burnt kernels and no edible popped corn.

I’ve been at a few fairs and events recently and have been seeing a lot of pretty awesome kettle corn for sale. I’ve been super into the whole “sweet and salty” thing recently, leaving me to wonder if my tastebuds are changing or if I have some weird hormone things going on. Either way, sweet and salty is king.

Now I realize that white chocolate contains no actual chocolate, but I guarantee that this recipe is still deliciously sweet and salty!

White Chocolate Matcha Popcorn

1/3 Cup Popcorn Kernels
2 TBSP Canola Oil
3 oz White Chocolate Pieces (about 1/2 Cup)
1/2 tsp Matcha
1/4 tsp Salt

Heat oil on high in a large pot with a fitted lid. After several minutes, test the heat by adding a 2-3 kernels. When they start to pop, you’re ready to go! Add the rest of the popcorn, cover the pot with a lid, shake the pan a bit and let them pop away for several minutes (shake the pan every now and then!) until the popping seems to stop.

Remove from heat and allow the popcorn to cool.

Time to prepare the white chocolate! You can prepare this in one of two ways:

Double Boiler
Add several inches of water to the bottom pan of the double boiler. Once it is boiling over high heat, put the broken chocolate pieces. Stir the chocolate until it melts completely. Add in the matcha and whisk until blended.

Microwave
Place chocolate pieces in a microwave-safe bowl. Cook for 30 seconds, remove the bowl, stir the chocolate a bit and repeat until the chocolate is completely melted. Add in the matcha and whisk until blended.

Add popcorn to a large bowl and drizzle the chocolate overtop. Sprinkle salt on top. Using your hands or some utensils, mix until the popcorn is evenly coated.

Serve and enjoy!

P.S. Being green, this would totally make an awesome party snack during Halloween!
